French Antique Chest of Drawers, Directoire Period 1800.
A warm colored cherry veneer embellishes this beautiful French antique chest of drawers. Behind the upper drawer is a writing top with 4 small drawers and a central open compartment. Prestigious green leather covers the middle part of the writing surface. Â Brass fittings and hardware decorate the drawers and feet of this exquisite piece.
Historical Background
From 1789 to 1804, French furniture took a sharp turn, condemning anything associated with
the Ancien Régime.
Previously predominant themes revolving around royal extravagance, noble power, and privilege were now perceived negatively.
While this period was economically and socially troubled, personal wealth among private citizens grew. And as it did, so did the demand for furniture.
Directoire furniture preserves the elegant and stately characteristics of earlier periods.
But, like Gustavian design, the Directoire style is much more restrained. This moderation is evident in the elongated, uncomplicated shapes and clear lines of most pieces.
Inexpensive materials like elm, walnut, fruitwood, beech, and other woods were the materials of choice for Directoire furniture.

The commode is in very good condition. all the brass hardware is original. The leather was probably replaced.
The commode measures H 35.44 in. x W 44.1 in. x D 21.07 inches (H 90 cm x W 112 cm x D 53.5 cm).
